Join us on June 10th for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Wende Museum's exhibitions and archives. Associate Curator Amanda Roth will introduce the current exhibition Dinner Party Politics, which examines the role of food in the political, cultural, and private lives of the Eastern Bloc. We'll explore the vaults that house The Wende Museum's extensive collection of art and artifacts from Cold War-era Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, and conclude with a short selection of vintage educational films and home movies screened on 16mm and Super 8mm by Audiovisual Archivist Kate Dollenmayer.

The Wende Museum was founded in 2002 in Culver City. Its mission is to preserve unique historical artifacts of the Cold War and make them available for innovative research and art projects that connect the past with the present. In late 2017 it will move to it its new location in the former Culver City National Guard Armory.

Note: The tour will require going up and down stairs. There is no functioning elevator in the building and the entrance to the museum is up a flight of stairs. The Wende apologizes to those who will be prevented from attending for this reason. The museum plans to move to a new facility that will be accessible on ground level. The Los Angeles Archivists Collective is thrilled to announce a tour of the Paramount Pictures Studios Archive on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 4:00 pm.

Paramount Pictures is one of the oldest and well known studios in the world, with over a century of history and over 3,000 feature films.  With such a vast output of film, the studio eventually built a facility to house and preserve its library of motion pictures. Today, the Paramount Archive is primarily a film tape archive, although it also includes digital assets, props and costumes, production stills and music related holdings as part of its collection. In 2009, the Paramount Archive took on the task of preserving films digitally. Working with IT software and infrastructure teams, the process of creating a Digital Archive was launched in November 2014.

The Go For Broke National Educational Center is a national non-profit organization with a mission to preserve the story and legacy of American veterans of Japanese ancestry, who served in the United States military during World War II.

Located in Little Tokyo’s historic district, the GFBNEC’s new The Defining Courage Experience exhibit offers visitors real-life examples of heroism and sacrifice by incorporating photographs and footage from a vast library of more than 1,150 oral history interviews of Japanese-American World War II veterans. Many of the veterans interviewed were born and raised in Los Angeles and its surrounding areas and their videotaped interviews provide visitors with stories about the neighborhoods in which they lived and worked, as well as the larger Japanese-American Community in and around Los Angeles. What’s more visitors will hear the veterans’ unique viewpoints as minorities of a pre-war and post-war Los Angeles, as well as their experiences during the period of forced removal and incarceration of Japanese-Americans. Today, The GRBNEC focuses on providing a place and means by which all people can share their stories and recognize how the legacy of these veterans contributes to the history of Los Angeles and the American ideals of freedom and equal opportunity for all.
