Call for Pitches – Acid Free

ISSUE 11: FICTIONS

Acid Free, the online quarterly magazine of the Los Angeles Archivists Collective, welcomes contributions for its upcoming issue. Acid Free seeks to be a smart, complicated, non-academic forum for a variety of voices and issues in our field, to ground archivists locally and regionally while also keeping an eye toward larger conversations and landscapes.

The theme of our Winter 2020 issue will be FICTIONS, which can be broadly interpreted through an archival lens. Possible topics may include: literary archives, research, or other topics involving artistic production and genre; systemic issues and the stories we tell ourselves within the profession; myths, lies, truth-telling, and subterfuge; creative speculation and ways of imagining; or other takes on the theme. Articles can highlight documents, collections, or exhibitions; explore local landmarks; share projects and stories; or address other theme-related archival subjects and issues.

Pitch us your idea by telling us in a few sentences what your article is about and how it relates to FICTIONS and archives. Please keep in mind our submission guidelines and check out current and past issues of Acid Free for examples. We are a visual magazine, so make sure your topic lends itself to plenty of images!

Pitches will be accepted through February 3, 2020 at: acidfree@laacollective.org.

Responses will be sent out the week of February 10th.

Steering Committee (3-year term)

Sarah Wade

Sarah Wade is a Special Collections Archivist at the Getty Research Institute. She earned her MLIS with an advanced certificate in archives and her MS in art history from Pratt Institute in New York. Prior to joining the GRI in 2018, Sarah worked in a variety of special collections repositories, including the University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago Library and Archives, the Boston Public Library Rare Books & Manuscripts Department, and the Frances Mulhall Achilles Library at the Whitney Museum of American Art.  

 

Events Subcommittee Chair (1-year term)

Azatuhi Babayan

Azatuhi Babayan is currently the L.A. as Subject Resident Archivist at USC and consults in her free time. She received her MLIS from UCLA in 2017 and holds a B.A. in English from UC Berkeley. As a lifelong resident of the Los Angeles area, she is drawn to community- and neighborhood-based archives in the city because of the culturally and historically layered landscape, teeming with vital stories that speak to the past and can help envision futures. Azatuhi has been involved with LAAC since 2016 and with the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project since 2018. As Co-Chair of the Social Events subcommittee, she looks forward to cultivating programs that serve and foster a symbiotic relationship between local archives, community organizations, and LAAC members.

Jasmine Larkin

Jasmine Larkin is currently the Accessioning Archivist at UCLA Library Special Collections. She received her MLIS with a specialization in Archival Studies from UCLA, and previously held positions at the Getty Research Institute and New York University. She has been an active member of the Events subcommittee for the past year coordinating tours to the Getty, the California African American Museum, and the Western Costume Company.

 

Outreach Subcommittee Chair (1-year term)

Rachel Rosenfeld

Rachel Rosenfeld is the Accessioning Archivist for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Margaret Herrick Library.  She received her MLIS from UCLA in 2012, and started her work at the Oscars the same year. Before obtaining her graduate degree she previously held archive-related positions at the Directors Guild of America, the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, Bonhams & Butterfields, and the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. 

 Her interests include movies, television, the internet, Los Angeles history, and dogs. She has been a member of LAAC since its founding, but is excited at the opportunity to become more involved. 

 

Publications Subcommittee Chair (1-year term)

Lori Dedeyan

Lori Dedeyan was most recently a Processing Archivist at UCLA Library Special Collections.  She received her MLIS in 2014 and has worked in special collections ever since, previously at the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley.  She enjoys writing on the intersection of art and archives and has done so in the past as a contributor to LAAC’s magazine, Acid Free. 

 I have been a member of the Publications Subcommittee for the past year and have enjoyed learning about its work during that time.  One of the year’s highlights was working as a part of the Acid Free editorial team to bring its tenth issue, Roots, to fruition.  This lovely issue also brought about an invitation to represent the one true Acid Free on a panel at the Acid-Free Art Book Fair. 

 It’s been a pleasure to learn from and work with my fellow subcommittee members, and look forward to drawing on this experience, as Publications Subcommittee Chair, to help guide the evolution of our work as we think about new projects for the coming year.

LAAC Call for Nominations

The Los Angeles Archivists Collective (LAAC) is accepting nominations for the following positions, with terms beginning in January 2020

  • Steering Committee member (3 years)
  • Outreach Subcommittee Chair (1 year)
  • Publications Subcommittee Chair (1 year)
  • Events Subcommittee Chair (1 year)

These positions will provide LAAC members with an opportunity to lead and contribute to future programming efforts, as well as engage, collaborate, and build relationships with the other local archivists and professional organizations. Steering Committee

The Steering Committee coordinates the organization’s meetings; presides at all meetings and seeks members to serve on subcommittees. The Steering Committee will also form ad-hoc groups as needed which include, but are not limited to, the Holiday Party/Fundraising committee; Nominating committee; and Scholarship committee.

Subcommittee Chairs

Subcommittee Chairs organize subcommittee meetings for 3 recently reorganized areas- Outreach, Publications, and Events to ensure subcommittee activities are scheduled and executed, and report to the membership on their progress at each meeting. If desired, Subcommittee Chairs may appoint a co-chair. More information about each subcommittee can be found on the LAAC website

The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 20, 2019 (self-nominations are encouraged). Please note that current students may not be elected to Steering Committee or Subcommittee Chair positions but may serve as members of subcommittees. 

To submit nominations, email hello@laacollective.org with the nominee name and position. Include a short biography and candidate statement detailing current work, professional interests, and ideas for the candidate's role in LAAC (approximately 200 words). The online ballot will open the week of January 6, 2020.


In addition, LAAC seeks the following subcommittee members:

  • Outreach, 3-5 members
  • Events, 3-5 members

Members are not elected--they volunteer to be active subcommittee members. Terms are for 1 year. Students are especially encouraged to participate in these positions - LAAC is interested in having local student representatives from UCLA, San Jose State, University of North Texas, and USC.

Each subcommittee will meet in-person or virtually three times a year, and check in with other local professional organizations to avoid duplicate efforts and/or identify potential collaborations for projects or events. Secretary (2-year term)

Chloe Noland

Bio: Born and raised in Burbank, CA, I received my BA in Creative Writing/Literature in 2010 from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA, during which I worked as a page in the library and developed a mutual love for fine art, preservation, and book handling. I received my MLIS from San Jose State University in spring 2018, where I found myself drawn to archives, bibliographic description & access, and cataloging. I currently work for the American Jewish University library system as an Assistant Librarian, where I have had the opportunity to work with specialized schemas developed for Judaic materials. As my career unfolds, I hope and aspire to continue working with special collections and vocabulary design.

Candidate Statement: I am really excited to self-nominate for the position of Secretary at LAAC! I joined the organization this past summer and attended the Fall Business Meeting for the first time. It was amazing to meet so many friendly people working in such varied aspects of information & archival practice, and to hear about their projects and stories! Although I do not have an archival background myself, I am very much an amateur archivist at home, and am hoping to learn more about the how, why and what of description, content management, and preservation tactics. I am also really excited to be part of a larger LA-based group of information professionals -- to draw inspiration from, collaborate with, and gain friendships and support, as well as learn more about the history and culture of our city. As both an inordinately organized person and detailed note-taker, I would be honored to serve as Secretary for the committee! Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

 

Treasurer (2-year term)

Neil Hodge

Neil Hodge earned an MLIS in Archival Studies from UCLA and is the Public Services Coordinator for UCLA Library Special Collections. Neil is also currently serving as Treasurer for the UCLA Library Staff Association.

 

Events Subcommittee Chair (1-year term)

Kate Papageorge

I am pleased to be running for the position of Co-Chair of LAAC’s Events Subcommittee along with my colleague Kelly Kress.

After studying at UCLA’s MLIS program, I worked in the studio archives at NCBUniversal and then Twentieth Century Fox. I also have experience with works on paper and rare books. Most recently, I took a data librarianship role at The Walt Disney Company.

I have been an active member of the Events Subcommittee (formerly Social Activities) for the past two years, planning a number of meetups and tours and assisting with others. In addition to that, I took over publishing the LAAC Newsletter this year. You may also remember me as the person shouting winning raffle numbers at this year’s holiday party.

I look forward to building on the success of our events to encourage connection among an even broader swath of the archival community.

Kelly Kress

Kelly Kress has worked as a professional archivist for 12 years, and is currently Assistant Archivist at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She received her MA in Public History in 2006, and previously held positions at Chicago's Newberry Library and the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill. Through work experience, collaboration, and interactions with a variety of repositories, including research libraries, non-profit organizations, small historical societies, and community libraries, she has a broad understanding of and appreciation for the different ways archival work is valued and performed.

Soon after relocating to Los Angeles in early 2016, I joined LAAC as a member of the Social Events subcommittee. I appreciate the community, camaraderie, and opportunities for personal and professional growth that LAAC provides, and look forward to continued involvement as we expand and evolve. I am excited to offer my time and energy as co-chair of the newly-formed Events subcommittee, extending my social planning experience to encompass the other archives-related events and happenings LAAC presents.

Social Media Subcommittee Chair (1-year term)

Grace Danico

Grace Danico is an archivist for a private collection, as well as a graphic designer and illustrator. She is responsible for the overall design and creative direction for LAAC and currently serves on the LAAC Steering Committee and Publications subcommittee. For the past two years, she served as Press and Publications subcommittee chair, where she led a team in various publishing efforts including Acid Free Magazine, Archival Do’s and Don’ts zines, newsletters and product creation.

Courtney Dean

Courtney Dean is Head of the Center for Primary Research and Training (CFPRT) in UCLA Library Special Collections where she works with graduate students from across the campus on special collections projects. She currently serves on the LAAC Steering Committee and the Publications subcommittee.

The Los Angeles Archivists Collective (LAAC) is accepting nominations for the following positions, with terms beginning in January 2019

Treasurer

The Treasurer is custodian of all funds; maintains financial records, requests and tracks all receipts and expenses, monitors the organization’s bank and PayPal accounts, provides reimbursements as needed, receives all proceeds from fundraising efforts, and presents financial reports to the organization at meetings.

Secretary

The Secretary takes minutes of all meetings of the organization, sends report of all meeting minutes to be posted on the website, maintains a copy of the current by-laws, maintains an accurate membership roster, and keeps records of organization documents.

Subcommittee Chairs
